about

The concepts pf professional and amateur loose all meaning when applied to the works of the students and faculty at the Music Department of Arts Magnet High School. For the past four years students and faculty have approached their art with all the seriousness and perfection of the professional, but with the exploratory sense and excitement of the amateur. The results of this kind of coupling were never more satisfying than in the sounds to be heard on this album. The listener is impressed with the masterful blend of young voices at the threshold of their development.
The 12 Lab Singers under the direction of Leonard Leach and the 24 member Chamber Choir directed by Sheilah Walker demonstrate a kind of ensemble singing that is seldom hard on a high school level
The listener is also impressed with the original writings of former A.M.H.S. students Antony Jackson, Jim Abbott, and Bert Pigg. Faculty member Curt Bradshaw's arrangement of Breaking Up Is Hard To Do is enough to banish forever the saying ... Those who can, do ... those who can't teach. When A.M.H.S. first opened fours ago September 1976 in a flash and flurry of preparation, few would have guessed the pieces would fall into place so quickly. Those of us who were there knew it was possible with the cooperation of the students...parents...supporters in the community and administration. The music department wishes to thank all those who had faith from the beginning. It is especially through the creative guidance of music co-ordinator Dr. Douglas Cornell that makes the high caliber of performances heard on this album possible.

This album is dedicated to the 1980 graduating seniors who represent the first class to matriculate all four years to A.M.H.S. and specifically to the following seniors of the vocal music department: Vicki Houchins, Sandra Matthews, Joe Amos, Donna De La Vega, Sandra Coke, Tanya Hahn, Jennifer Lindsey, Tommy Morgan and James Smith.
