The Arts Magnet music program at Booker T. Washington in Dallas is now entering tis seventh year. During this time we have produced three all-original student arranger's albums featuring the Lab Band. Many of the arrangements on these albums include vocal soloists. this album is different! It is all-original, like its forerunners, but its performed by a jazz combo, and there are no vocals.
One finds a wide variety in the six tunes on this album. There is one original funk tune, "Elephant Blues"; a jazz waltz, "Windows"; a ballad, "Round Midnight"; a fast Latin, "Captain Marvel"; a be-bop tune, "Intrepid Fox"; and a slow swing "Speak No Evil". Among them any listener is bound to find one he/she likes.
The Arts Magnet Music Cluster offers to the high school student in DISD a varied program which includes: orchestral strings, vocal study, guitar, piano, winds, and percussion. All of these are wrapped together by a Comprehensive Musicianship plan which stresses performance, analysis and creativity.
AMHS is located at 2501 Flora Street on the edge (the leading edge) of the newly formed Arts District near downtown Dallas. Students may choose a program in Dance, Theatre Arts, or Visual Arts as well as Music. The academic subjects are also an integral part of any student's program at the school.
I hope you'll enjoy this album and marvel, as I do, in the realization that these students are still in high school - creating and performing - but sounding like professionals.
